You may have noticed on your visits to Mt Lawley the new Lightbox Laneway Gallery between St Michaels and Orno Interiors just off Beaufort Street. Set up by the City of Vincent the aim of the Lightbox Laneway Gallery is a public exhibition space to showcase local artists. Every three months the lightboxes change, showcasing four artists a year. Ruby Smedley is the most recent artist to exhibit her work in this public street exhibition. Ruby’s work is focused on capturing fleeting and honest emotion of the people she encounters.
In this series Strangers We Meet Ruby deconstructs how people perceive themselves and paints an atmosphere they wouldn’t consider favourable. Sincere depiction and a veracious beauty is produced through this contradiction. Uncovered and unashamed emotion explored within these portraits, are illuminated in the lightboxes. First painted with loose thick brushstrokes on canvas, these images are then be transferred onto transparency paper allowing the work to be viewed with luminous detail at night.
